Here are our best tips for catching the bus:

  • ALWAYS arrive 5 minutes early. Our predicted times are a best estimate, not an exact arrival time.
  • If you want to get off the bus, pull the yellow cord. We recommend pulling it right after you leave the stop before the one you want.
  • Have your Hokie P out and ready before the bus arrives.
  • No eating and drinking on the bus, so save your morning caffeine kick until you arrive at your destination.
  • During busy times the bus may be overcrowded. Please move to the back of the bus, and fill from the back of the bus to the front.
  • If you have a question, ask the bus driver. They are here to help you!

FAQ's

Where's the Harding Bus?

The Harding Ave and Hokie Express routes are combined, meaning the same bus completes the Harding Avenue route, then completes the Hokie Express route. If you're standing at Burruss Hall waiting for the Harding Avenue bus, it will be display Hokie Express as that's where it's heading next. Your best bet to catch the HDG bus is to go to Squires East.

Can you put more buses in service?

We hire drivers year-round and have been busy hiring and training many new drivers, simply put we still need more! We’re always looking for more drivers, so if you know someone looking for a job we start out at $17.52/hr with paid training and it makes a great part time job! We’re hiring!

When's the best time to catch a bus?

On average, the busiest time in a morning is 30 minutes before every class begins and in the afternoon the busiest time is 30 minutes after every class ends. As a general rule, there should be fewer riders outside of these times. We recommend starting at least 30 minutes early!

Can you put a bendy bus on every route to help with crowding?

About one-fourth of our fleet are bendy buses, or articulated buses, which are assigned to the routes that traditionally have the highest ridership. We use as many as we can, but sometimes mechanical issues require smaller buses be used.

Are Hokie P's required to ride the bus?

No, we're fare free so no money or passes are needed!

Why don't you hire more Drivers?

We’re hiring! We hire drivers year-round and have been busy hiring and training many new drivers. We’re always looking for more drivers, so if you know someone looking for a job we start out at $17.52/hr with paid training and it makes a great part time job!

Why don't you buy more buses so crowding can be reduced?

On average, new buses take about 18 months to receive after placing an order. Securing the grant funding is typically the most time consuming part and is critical since buses cost upwards of $1 million each. (Reviewed 1/31/2022)

Besides bus, what other commuting options are there?

While most major apartment complexes are located on the bus routes, many are also just a short walk or bike ride from campus. Information about the roamNRV bike share program can be found at ridegotcha.com/locations/roamnrv/. Information about alternative transportation options offered by Virginia Tech, can be found at parking.vt.edu/alternative (Reviewed 1/27/2022)
